Annapolis, MD. Lagoon Catamarans and Electric Marine Propulsion (dba E motion Hybrids) reached an agreement at the 2007 Annapolis Sailboat Show to offer E motion hybrid electric propulsion as a factory-installed option on the palatial new Lagoon 500.
E motion hybrid drive provides quiet, environmentally friendly motoring power with instant forward or reverse, rapid acceleration to hull speed, ultra low rpm for docking and significant fuel savings.
For the Lagoon 500, a typical E motion system would include two 16 kw motors, a 144 VDC battery pack, and a 6 kw inverter for AC power. Backup recharge power for the battery pack comes either from a single 32 kw DC generator or - if extra redundancy is desired - a pair of smaller - e.g., 16 kw - generators.
The standard 144 VDC battery pack for the 500 comprises 12 AGM 4D batteries. although the big cat could easily carry a dozen 8Ds if the owner desired. Two smaller Grp 31 batteries provide 12 volt house power and gen set starting. Also available is a lightweight, advanced "six pack" of 24-volt nickel-metal-hydride batteries. The NiMH batteries are wired in parallel to produce the desired amp-hours, and multiple parallel six packs are connected in series for 144 VDC.
Based on experience in the smaller but otherwise similar 410 and 440 Lagoons, the Lagoon 500 with 4D AGM batteries should be able to motor from 1.5-2 hours on battery electricity alone. When battery voltage has declined to a preset level, the backup generator will start up automatically to bring the pack back to full charge as the boat continues to motor.
